New 3-D Mammography at The Breast Center of Greensboro Imaging Offers More Accurate Diagnoses

Technology has chance to catch disease at earlier, more treatable stages

Greensboro, NC—May 21, 2013—The Breast Center of Greensboro Imaging is one of the first diagnostic centers in North Carolina to offer 3-D mammography (breast tomosynthesis) for breast cancer screening. Breast tomosynthesis produces a three-dimensional view of the breast tissue that helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast abnormalities without the limitation of overlapping tissue.

The center’s Selenia® Dimensions® 3-D mammography system is made by Hologic, a world leader in digital mammography. The Selenia Dimensions system offers exceptionally sharp breast images, an advanced ergonomic design providing more patient comfort, and the ground-breaking tomosynthesis platform designed to deliver superior performance.

“Early detection is key when dealing with breast cancer. I’m proud our center is one of the first in North Carolina to offer this technology,” says Dr. Beth Brown, at the Breast Center of Greensboro. Studies say when 3-D mammography is combined with a conventional 2-D mammography, cancer detection rates are higher than with conventional 2-D mammography alone. At the same time, the recall rates are reduced, meaning fewer patients are called back unnecessarily.

The 3-D mammography screening experience is similar to a traditional mammogram. During a 3-D mammography exam, multiple low-dose images of the breast are taken at different angles. These images are then combined to recreate a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3-D reconstruction of the breast.

Because this new technology represents a significant improvement in the performance of standard mammography, The Breast Center of Greensboro Imaging expects to improve early detection for women with dense or fatty breasts. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her life. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If breast cancer is detected early, a patient’s five-year survival rate is 98 percent.

The Breast Center of Greensboro Imaging is committed to the fight against breast cancer. In offering 3-D mammography and digital mammography, The Breast Center of Greensboro Imaging provides the latest in imaging technology.
